Gymnastics and Tumbling

The Tampa Y offers preschool and youth recreational gymnastics classes, tumbling classes and competitive gymnastics teams at the Bob Sierra Youth and Family Center and the North Brandon Family YMCA. 

Kids and teens of all ages, skills and abilities can participate in our gymnastics classes! The Y's trained and experienced coaches and instructors have carefully developed exercises, drills and routines appropriate for each skill level. The gymnastics staff will determine the correct class or team for your child athlete!

The Tampa Y ensures the gym is a positive, fun and safe place for youth to learn and develop self-discipline. Gymnastics coaches support and provide opportunities for each athlete to improve their skills. Gymnasts will experience fun, appropriately challenging activities with encouragement from their coaches.

Recreational Gymnastics

In recreational gymnastics classes at the Tampa Y, participants will begin learning the basic skills in gymnastics events, including vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor, rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, high bar and vault. Flexibility and strength training are an integral part of each 55-minute class. Gymnasts typically complete four physical circuits, a fun game, exercise or foam pit activity each class to improve strength and flexibility.

Little Jets (11 months - 4 years old) provides a "moving" experience for toddlers. The gymnastics and movement skills in this class are designed to improve gross motor skills, coordination and fitness. This parent/child class is structured to engage both the parent and toddler in all activities.

Rockets (3 - 5 years old) is a fun and fast-paced program that includes gymnastics and motor development skills that progress from basic rolls and balance to cartwheels. This class is geared to improve your child's coordination, fitness and flexibility.

Gymnastics incorporates strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and discipline. Gymnasts participate on all four apparati: vault, bars, beam and floor. 

Our progressive gymnastics program is build to meet each gymnast at their skill level. Participants will register for our Progressive Gymnastics program and will be evaluated and placed into the appropriate class level based on skill level and includes rolls, cartwheel, handstand, pullover, casts, jumps, turns and leaps.

Beginner Classes
Kids and teens with no prior gymnastics experience can start in the beginner gymnastics class. Participants will learn gymnastics basics on all apparati, including proper form and gymnastics fundamentals.

Intermediate Classes
Intermediate gymnastics classes are designed for gymnasts who have mastered basic skills and ready for a new challenge. 

Advanced Classes
After gymnasts have mastered the skills in intermediate gymnastics, they can progress to the advanced class and train new challenges. Gymnasts will work to prepare for the competitive team on all four Women’s Junior Olympic Events. Advanced gymnastics is a pre-team level for those who wish to join the competitive team or work on and advance their skills. The advanced class is by staff recommendation only.

From basic skills to advanced flips and twists, the Tampa Y tumbling classes are focused on a gymnast’s tumbling performance. Tumbling classes reinforce floor routine and tumbling basics by enhancing flexibility and performing drills. We have classes available from beginner to intermediate at our South Tampa YMCA location.

Top Flight Competitive Gymnastics Team

The Top Flight competitive gymnastics team is for advanced gymnasts who want to compete in Levels 1 - 10 and the Xcel Program. Top Flight team members compete in both AAU and USAG divisions at the state, regional and national level.

Athletes must complete an evaluation with the gymnastics director in order to register.
